The Hong Kong Prizes and Awards are presented to those who have excelled in different fields of research and contribution, in order to promote and encourage excellence in academic and professional endeavours.
The History Prize is awarded for outstanding research in the field of Hong Kong history, with special consideration given to those whose work has promoted the status of Hong Kong studies as a respectable field of scholarship in Asia. It is named in honour of the late Professor George B. Endacott, Lecturer (1946-57) and Senior Lecturer (1957-62) in the Department of History, University of Hong Kong.
Professor Endacott was responsible, virtually single-handedly, for the re-establishment of the History Department in 1946. He played an important role in the development of Hong Kong history as a respectable area of scholarship in the 1950s.
